About the Original

City On A Hill is created and executive produced by Chuck MacLean (Boston Strangler), with multiple Emmy winner Tom Fontana (Homicide: Life on the Street) serving as showrunner, executive producer and one of the writers. The series is set in early 1990s Boston, rife with criminals emboldened by local law enforcement agencies in which corruption and racism was the norm. In this fictional account, assistant district attorney Decourcy Ward (Hodge) arrives from Brooklyn and forms an unlikely alliance with a corrupt yet venerated FBI veteran, Jackie Rohr (Bacon). Together, they take on a family of armored car robbers from Charlestown in a case that grows to involve, and ultimately subvert, the entire criminal justice system of Boston. Produced by SHOWTIME, CITY ON A HILL also stars Jonathan Tucker (Kingdom), Mark O’Brien (Halt and Catch Fire), Jill Hennessy (Crossing Jordan), Lauren E. Banks (Instinct), Amanda Clayton (Tyler Perry’s If Loving You Is Wrong), Sarah Shahi (Fairly Legal), Kevin Chapman (BROTHERHOOD) and Tony® Award nominee Jere Shea (Passion), with Kevin Dunn (Veep) recurring.

CITY ON A HILL is executive produced by Chuck MacLean, Tom Fontana, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, Jennifer Todd, Michael Cuesta, James Mangold and Barry Levinson. MacLean wrote the pilot and Cuesta directed. Kevin Bacon and Jorge Zamacona serve as co-executive producers.

 

BIOS

KEVIN BACON – “Jackie Rohr”

 Kevin Bacon is one of the foremost actors of his generation. His talent for balancing starring roles with powerful supporting characters in film, television and on stage has allowed him to build a varied and critically acclaimed body of work.

With the support of his parents, Bacon left his native Philadelphia to become the youngest student at Circle in the Square Theatre in New York, where he studied until he made his film debut as “Chip” in NATIONAL LAMPOON’S ANIMAL HOUSE. This led to roles in DINER and FOOTLOOSE the latter of which propelled him to stardom.

Bacon has starred in a wide range of film genres, from action thrillers to romantic comedies to heavy dramas, and even the occasional musical. Just some of Bacon’s film credits include John Hughes’ SHE’S HAVING A BABY, THE BIG PICTURE,  TREMORS, FLATLINERS, JFK, A FEW GOOD MEN, THE RIVER WILD for which he received a Golden Globe Award nomination, MURDER IN THE FIRST for which he was named Best Actor by The Broadcast Film Critics Association and received Best Supporting Actor nominations from The Screen Actors Guild and the London Film Critics Circle, Ron Howard’s award-winning APOLLO 13 Clint Eastwood’s Academy Award nominated film MYSTIC RIVER and THE WOODSMAN for which he received an IFP Spirit Award nomination.

More recently, Bacon starred in Greg McLean’s horror film THE DARKNESS. He also appeared in Scott Cooper’s BLACK MASS opposite Johnny Depp; he starred in the indie thriller COP CAR, and he co-starred in PATRIOTS DAY alongside Mark Wahlberg, John Goodman and J.K. Simmons.

In 2017, Bacon starred in Jill Soloway’s series I LOVE DICK alongside Kathryn Hahn. His portrayal earned him a Golden Globe Award nomination for Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy. Later that year, Kevin also starred in the television movie STORY OF A GIRL which marked the directing debut of his wife Kyra Sedgwick.

Bacon starred for three seasons on the seriesTHE FOLLOWING. In 2009, he starred in the cable movie TAKING CHANCE for which he won a Golden Globe Award and a SAG Award.  His other television credits include the public television staging of Lanford Wilson’s play, LEMON SKY a production that teamed him with his then-future wife, Kyra Sedgwick; THE GIFT, the cable film  ENORMOUS CHANGES AT THE LAST MINUTE, WILL & GRACE, BORED TO DEATH and he got his start on THE GUIDING LIGHT.

 In 1996, Bacon made his directorial debut with LOSING CHASE, starring Kyra Sedgwick, Beau Bridges and Helen Mirren. The film was honored with three Golden Globe Award nominations. Bacon directed his second film, LOVERBOY, which he also produced. Bacon also directed several episodes of Sedgwick’s hit show, THE CLOSER.

Bacon’s stage work includes off-Broadway productions such as ALBUM, POOR LITTLE LAMBS and GETTING OUT. He made his Broadway debut in 1983 with Sean Penn in SLAB BOYS, and starred in the 1986 production of Joe Orton’s LOOT. He also starred in Theresa Rebeck’s comedy SPIKE HEELS. In 2002, he starred in the one-man show AN ALMOST HOLY PICTURE written by Heather McDonald.

Bacon was seen onstage in the celebrated Los Angeles reading of Academy Award winner Dustin Lance Black’s play, 8. The reading was a benefit for the American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact to raise funds to overturn California’s Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. Bacon starred alongside George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Martin Sheen, Jane Lynch, John C. Reilly amongst others.

 

ALDIS HODGE – “Decourcy Ward”

 Aldis Hodge is a SAG Award winning actor, who has built a dynamic career as a versatile performer shining in roles in both film and television. Hodge is perhaps best known for his role as ‘Noah’ in the WGN, critically acclaimed series UNDERGROUND

Hodge will next be seen in the Paramount Pictures film WHAT MEN WANT starring opposite Taraji P. Henson and Tracy Morgan. The film is produced by Will Packer, directed by Adam Shankman and will be released in February. Later in 2019, Hodge will

In 2018, Hodge’s film THE BRIAN BANKS STORY premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival to strong reviews and received the Audience Award. The Hollywood Reporter described his performance as “beautifully subtle film acting, and audiences should be exposed to his fine work.” The film will release in August of this year. Also in 2018, he finished work on the independent film CLEMENCY with Alfre Woodard, which will premiere in competition at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival. Last year, Hodge also appeared in the CBS All Access short STAR TREK: DISCOVERY – CALYPSO and the Netflix anthology series MEDAL OF HONOR.

In 2017, Hodge was seen in the critically acclaimed film HIDDEN FIGURES alongside Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer and Janelle Monáe. The film received three Oscar nominations including Best Picture, two Golden Globe nominations, in addition to winning a SAG award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture as well as an NAACP Award for Outstanding Motion Picture. Hodge also earned a National Board of Review Award and Palm Springs Film Festival Best Ensemble Award for his role in the film. Also in 2017, Hodge was seen in the fourth season of the Emmy winning series BLACK MIRROR.

In 2016, Hodge was seen in the Edward Zwick film JACK REACHER: NEVER GO BACK with Tom Cruise. In 2015, Hodge starred in STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON portraying MC Ren, a member of the pioneering rap group N.W.A. The film captivated audiences all over the world and was nominated for an Oscar, PGA and SAG Award as well as won the NAACP Award for Outstanding Motion Picture. In 2013, Hodge was seen in the Fox Searchlight eco-terrorism thriller THE EAST, alongside Alexander Skarsgard and Patricia Clarkson.

His other television roles include LEVERAGE, TURN, FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, SUPERNATURAL, THE WALKING DEAD, GIRLFRIENDS, THE BLACKLIST,  CITY OF ANGELS, BONES, CSI, ER, CHARMED and BOSTON PUBLIC.

At the age of three, Hodge began his career when he booked a print job for Essence magazine with his brother Edwin Hodge. He continued to work as a model for print ads and commercials until he made the transition onto the screen when he and his brother were cast on SESAME STREET and later on stage when they joined the Tony-winning revival of SHOWBOAT on Broadway. During that period, he also appeared in several movies including DIE HARD WITH A VEGEANCE, BED OF ROSES, “THE STONE HOUSE, EDMOND, THE LADY KILLERS and BIG MOMMA’S HOUSE.

Hodge was born in Jacksonville, North Carolina and raised in New York.  In addition to acting, Hodge is developing projects for film and television, designs luxury timepieces and is an avid artist and painter.  

 

JONATHAN TUCKER – “Frankie Ryan”

 Throughout his impressive career, actor Jonathan Tucker has had the good fortune of working with some of today’s most talented filmmakers.  More recently, he received “electrifying” reviews for the DirecTV drama series KINGDOM, simultaneously juggled Starz’s interpretation of Neil Gaiman’s contemporary fantasy novel, AMERICAN GODS as Low Key Lyesmith, made an indelible impression in Season 2 of HBO’s Emmy-nominated WESTWORLD, and also starred in FX Network’s SNOWFALL drama which reunites him with showrunner Dave Andron with whom he previously worked on JUSTIFIED.  In addition to portraying a central role in CALL OF DUTY:WWII, Tucker has since wrapped the Elizabeth Banks helmed CHARLIE’s ANGELS reboot with Kristen Stewart.

Though a Boston native, Tucker has had the opportunity to travel the world over, including a couple years in Paris as a young boy, thanks to his renowned art historian/professor/curator father, Paul Hayes Tucker, and marketing consultant mother, Maggie Moss-Tucker.  By third grade, he was starring in the Boston Ballet’s production of “The Nutcracker” and continued as a member of the company for five years.  He is also a graduate of Ojai’s Thacher School.

 

MARK O’BRIEN - “Jimmy Ryan”

O’Brien recently completed Fox Searchlight Picture’s READY OR NOT opposite Samara Weaving. The thriller followers a bride’s wedding night and takes a sinister turn when her eccentric new in-laws force her to take part in a terrifying game and will release in 2019. He will also star alongside Will Patton in the independent thriller-drama HAMMER. Patton and O’Brien are playing a father and son with Patton’s character still picking up the pieces of his family after kicking his oldest son (O’Brien) out of the house. The son shows up on the run from a botched drug deal, forcing his father to help him escape from the vengeful dealer he crossed.

O’Brien played Billy Shore in Jason Reitman’s THE FRONT RUNNER with Hugh Jackman, which premiered this November. He also recently completed production for Adriana Magg’s GOALIE that will be release by Mongrel March 1st as well as on Noah Baumbach’s UNTITLED NOAH BAUMBACH PROJECT opposite Scarlett Johansson.

Additional credits include BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE opposite Jeff Bridges, Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, THE DARKEST MINDS, released by Twentieth Century Fox and HOW IT ENDS opposite Theo James and Forest Whitaker, STATE LIKE SLEEP opposite Michael Shannon, and the Oscar nominated ARRIVAL. On the small screen, he was a series regular on THE LAST TYCOON and had recurring roles in HALT AND CATCH FIRE and HANNIBAL.   

 

LAUREN E. BANKS – “Siobhan Quays”

 Lauren graduated with an MFA from the Yale Drama School, and earned her Bachelors from Howard University. Her other recent credits include recurring roles on in MANIAC, opposite Justin Theroux and on DIETLAND, opposite Julianna Margulies.

 

AMANDA CLAYTON – “Cathy Ryan”

In 2017, Clayton received rave reviews and an IndieFEST Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for her performance in the independent thriller BAD FRANK. She was previously seen on the big screen in the Martin Scorsese produced biographical drama BLEED FOR THIS opposite Miles Teller, Katey Sagal and Aaron Eckhart.. Clayton made her feature film debut in Walt Disney Picture’s JOHN CARTER opposite Taylor Kitsch.  On television, Clayton stars on the Tyler Perry drama IF LOVING YOU IS WRONG. Her other television credits include guest starring roles on NCIS: LOS ANGELES, NCIS: NEW ORLEANS, MAJOR CRIMES, and THE MENTALIST.

Born in Johnston, Rhode Island, Clayton began studying theater at the University of Rhode Island before moving to New York to further her study of acting at the New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts.  While in New York, she started a theater company that did a number of original plays that had their premieres off-off-Broadway. She continued her work in theater by touring in a theatrical adaptation of Lois Lowry’s awards winning novel THE GIVER.

 

SARAH SHAHI – “Rachel Behnam” 

Sarah Shahi most recently starred as Mara, a former hostage negotiator and human behavior expert, in the series REVERIE, a grounded thriller navigating the world of virtual-reality. Shahi is best known for her role on CBS’s PERSON OF INTEREST as Sameen Shaw and Carmen de la Pica on Showtime’s THE L WORD. She received the 2012 Gracie Award for “Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Breakthrough Role” for her work in FAIRLY LEGAL as Kate Reed. Other television credits include PITCH, CHICAGO FIRE, LIFE, REBA, THE SOPRANOS, RAY DONOVAN, ALIAS and TEACHERS.

Sarah can also be seen on the silver screen in the thriller BULLET TO THE HEAD opposite Sylvester Stallone and indie comedy FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION. Additional feature credits include DEVINE ACCESS with Billy Burke, Gary Cole, and Patrick Warburton, THE TROUBLE WITH BLISS, SHADES OF RAY, CROSSING OVER, I DON’T KNOW HOW SHE DOES IT, OLD SCHOOL, and HANGMAN opposite Al Pacino and Karl Urban.

She recently wrapped production on the indie drama LANGUAGE ARTS which follows her character, Allison, as she tries to heal her autistic son and the indie comedy JUDY SMALLS in which she will star opposite Rob Corddry in the William-Teitler directed film based on the book by Nancy Doyne.

 

TOM FONTANA - Executive Producer/Showrunner

 Tom Fontana has written and produced such groundbreaking television series as ST. ELSEWHERE, HOMICIDE: LIFE ON THE STREET, OZ, The PHILANTHROPIST, COPPER and BORGIA. Fontana has received, among others, three Emmy Awards, four Peabody Awards, three Writers' Guild Awards, Four Television Critics Association Awards, the Cable Ace Award, the Humanitas Prize, a Special Edgar and the first prize at the Cinema Tout Ecran Festival in Geneva.  

Fontana co-founded the non-profit charity, Stockings with Care. He’s on the Board of the Writers Guild Initiative, The NYPD Police Museum, The Creative Coalition, The Acting Company, The Williamstown Theatre Festival and The International Council of The Paley Media Center.

 

JENNIFER TODD – Executive Producer

 Jennifer Todd has been a film and television producer for over 20 years, and some of her notable credits include ALICE IN WONDERLAND and ALICE THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS, ACROSS THE UNIVERSEMEMENTO, and the AUSTIN POWERS franchise. In 2017 and 2018, Jennifer produced the 89th and 90th Annual Academy Awards with Michael DeLuca for ABC, hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.

Jennifer is currently producing both films and television under her recently established banner, Jennifer Todd Pictures, with a first-look feature deal at Amblin Partners.  She most recently finished production on the Warner Bros. film TORRANCE, starring Ben Affleck and directed by Gavin O’Connor which will be released in 2019.

Prolific in both independent and studio films as well as television, Jennifer has been nominated for three Emmys, two Golden Globes, and the PGA David L. Wolper Award for Outstanding Producer of Longform Television. She has won the Independent Spirit Award for Best Picture, Women In Film's Lucy Award, The Glaad Media Award and a People's Choice Award. From 2012 to 2018, Jennifer served as the President of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's production company Pearl Street Films. In 2016, she produced LIVE BY NIGHT for Warner Bros., which Affleck directed and starred in, and was also an Executive Producer of Universal’s JASON BOURNE. Additionally, Jennifer was an Executive Producer on HBO’s PROJECT GREENLIGHT, as well as the series INCORPORATED for the Syfy channel.

Some of Jennifer’s other credits include CELESTE AND JESSE FOREVER, MUST LOVE DOGS, PRIMEBOILER ROOM, NOW AND THEN, and the HBO film IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK II.
